Re-Elect Matt Aronson - District 7 Councillor

Hi, it's me, Matt. You know me as:

Your Neighbour

I live right here in District 7 with my partner, Lucy, and my kids, and our rescue dog, Jolene. I experience the same issues you do - from household budgeting to traffic concerns. When the snowplows wake us at 6 AM or construction blocks our street, I'm right there with you.

Your Advocate

As an attorney at Westmount-based Adessky Attorneys, I'm primarily an immigration lawyer, fighting for families to come to or stay in Canada and for employers to get the workers they need. I also help families navigate real estate, small businesses grow, and non-profits thrive. Member of both the Quebec and Ontario Bars, I bring the same tenacity to City Hall that I bring to my legal practice - standing up for what's right, not what's easy.

Your Representative

Trusted by my council colleagues to carry three Commissioner portfolios - Climate & Sustainability, Economic Development, and Citizen Engagement. It's a heavy workload, but I'm honored to shoulder it for our community. When there's work to be done, I step up - that's what public service means to me.

  • Hire Park Wardens to educate about urban wildlife, enforce rules and protect green spaces
  • Enhance security with improved coordination between police & social workers

A City with Frictionless Service

In the next four years, we should:

  • Streamline permits with transparent guidelines

  • Optimize coordination of city projects to reduce disruptions

Sustainable and Climate Resilient

In the next four years, we should:

  • Hire Professional Sustainability Director to prioritize and coordinate initiatives
  • Update building codes to promote energy and material efficiency while respecting heritage
  • Expand tree canopy, demineralized greenspaces and pollinator corridors
  • Launch Citizen-led "adopt a greenspace" program
  • Institute robust GHG emissions budgeting

Why This Election Matters

Leadership means making difficult choices, even when they're unpopular. Here's why I make the decisions I do - with transparency about my reasoning and respect for those who disagree.

The Southeast Sector: Getting Development Right

I supported the Southeast Special Planning Program (PPU) to set a new vision for revitalization and development near Atwater and St. Catherine Street and along Dorchester Boulevard. More delays were not an option.

The Challenge

While the area has declined, becoming neglected, dirty and unsafe, we desperately need more housing to be built, and better access to public green spaces.

The Choice

Either we delay, dither and defer while the situation worsens, or do something about the problem. The status quo isn't working, it is time for bold action.

The Solution

A plan that tackles the issues while securing: revitalization while protecting heritage, affordable housing options, community leverage over developers, and additional public green spaces.

Much needed change is coming. With your support, we'll ensure it enhances, not erases, what makes Westmount special.

Supporting the Southeast PPU

I voted in favour of moving forward with a plan that addresses our housing crisis, adds green space and addresses derelict and dangerous areas of the City, while protecting our built heritage and incentivizing developers to build projects in the public interest. Some neighbors wanted more delays to refine the plan further. I believe the time for action is now.

Reducing Landfill Pickup Frequency

I voted to reduce winter landfill pickup frequency, and to end pickups from deep within private properties and in inaccessible lanes - and that cut the amount of landfill we discarded by almost 10%, truck emissions by 3.1 tonnes, and saved taxpayer money, while boosting composting by over 10%. It caused inconvenience to some of us, but I believe the benefits outweigh the sacrifices in the long term.

My Commitment to You

Not everyone agrees with every decision, and that's okay - democracy thrives on respectful disagreement. As your representative, I will continue to listen to all sides, and I will vote for good policies - even if it would be easier to appease opposition at the expense of the best outcomes for the community. I will always be transparent about my reasoning, always listen to your concerns, and always put our community first.

My Message to You

Four years ago, you took a chance on me. Since then, I've worked tirelessly to earn your trust every single day.

Being your councillor has been the honour of my life. I've walked our streets, listened at community meetings, responded to your emails and calls, and fought for what matters most to our neighbourhood. From repaving Sherbrooke West to protecting our green spaces, from supporting local businesses to pushing for sustainability initiatives - every decision has been guided by one question: What's best for District 7?

I won't pretend every decision has been easy or universally popular. Leadership sometimes means making tough choices - choices that balance immediate convenience with long-term benefits, that weigh individual preferences against community needs. But I've always approached these decisions with transparency, care, and a commitment to our shared values.

Here's what I promise for the next four years: I will continue to show up, listen deeply, work hard, and put our community first. I will champion affordable housing so our young families and seniors can stay in the neighbourhood they love. I will push for infrastructure improvements that make our daily lives easier. I will support our local businesses and ensure our commercial areas thrive. And I will lead on sustainability because our children deserve a liveable future.

This campaign isn't about me - it's about us. It's about the kind of community we want to build together. One where everyone feels at home, where our streets are safe and well-maintained, where city services work smoothly, and where we face climate challenges with courage and action.

With your support, we'll continue to make District 7 - and the City of Westmount - that we all deserve: inclusive, sustainable, vibrant, and true to its character. Let's keep building our future, together!

Thank you for the privilege of serving you.
